Steve has been interested in railroads for as long as he can remember. His first Christmas memory is—you guessed it—a Lionel train set.

Steve was an educator for the Jefferson County School District from 1973 to 2005. In the late 70’s, he had a student who was nuts about trains…Ed Dickens, the future builder and owner of the Rio Golden Railroad! “Interesting how our paths crossed so long ago,” says Steve.

In addition to working for the Rio Golden, Steve works at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, where he’s involved with educational programming and customer service. He’s a professional storyteller with the Rocky Mountain Storytellers’ Conference, and he still works with Jeffco Schools through the outdoor education department. His wife, Lynette, says that he’s flunked retirement.

Today, Steve is the operations manager of the Rio Golden. He handles daily chores around the railroad, such as payroll and scheduling. He also spends time spreading the word about the Rio Golden Railroad, which he considers to be one of the best 15” railroads in the country.

Like many with an interest in the Iron Horse, Jim's first experience with railroading was a Lionel train under a Pennsylvania Christmas tree. Since then, his interest has broadened to include larger scale trains, up to and including the full-sized locomotives and freight and passenger cars rolling across America.

Jim's careers have included working as a mechanic, a computer operator, serving four years in the Air Force, and twenty-one years in Space Shuttle launch operations. After moving to Colorado in 2000, he has worked in retail sales and passenger railcar manufacturing.

Jim is a member of the Union Pacific Historical Society, the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, the Timber Heritage Association, the Northwest Railway Museum in Washington, the Colorado Railroad Museum, and the Florida East Coast Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.
